Arlington Urban Ministries Offers Support Services

Arlington Urban Ministries is an outreach that assists families with financial needs and offers emotional and spiritual support through prayer, counseling, worship and Bible study.
The vision of Arlington Urban Ministries is to focus on meeting the needs of people on the streets and in the corners of society where they are not being reached by the traditional church.  Arlington Urban Ministries is designed to work with people to help them solve their problems through a more complete relationship with Christ.
Office manager Sandra Fry said there are few paid employees at Arlington Urban Ministries.  Instead, committed and talented volunteers perform most of the work.  "Volunteers and staff use their spiritual gifts every day at our ministry.  The frontline workers offer the tangibles to our clients: food for nourishment and financial assistance to keep the electricity on and the landlord at bay.  But the intangibles are also offered, understanding, hope, prayer and love," Fry said.
Arlington Urban Ministry's clients have the same hopes and dreams as everyone and want to take care of their families; have pride in themselves and their appearance; want to work, and want someone to recognize them as God's children.
"However, things have gotten in the way of their dreams.  They need help," Fry said.  "People usually don't ask for much, just a little something to get them through the month.  Help with utilities, rent or food.  One of our wonderful volunteers got an e-mail from a client recently.  'Thank you for being so kind.  I know $40 doesn't seem like a lot but it is when you don't have it.'"
Arlington Urban Ministries believes in the power of prayer and realizes that God is directing our work and asks for guidance through prayer at each meeting held in our office.  Often a client will ask us to pray with them while they are in the office.  Clients we assist during the month are lifted up in prayer by the Trinity United Methodist Church prayer team.  The prayer team asks God to help and bless these people.
I have witnessed God's work in progress.  St. Francis of Assisi told his followers, "preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words."  If you walk through the doors at 701 Dugan, you will see people joined together in love doing what Jesus commanded, sometimes with words.
